A number of factors can affect your prognosis. Some of the most commonly-recognized factors are summarized in the following chart. (Note: For some lab values, the normal range may be different depending on the lab where the test is being done.)

Routine laboratory testing:	More active disease indicated by:
ß₂M Serum albumin Serum creatinine Lactate dehydrogenase (LD or LDH) C-reactive Protein (CRP) Hemoglobin Platelet count	Higher levels (greater than 3 mg/L) Lower levels (less than 35 g/L) Higher than normal Higher than normal Higher than normal Lower than normal Lower than normal
Special tests:	More active disease indicated by:
Plasma cell labeling index (PCLI) Plasma cell morphology Chromosome analysis or FISH (cytogenetic testing) Bone marrow microvessel density (MVD)	High percentage of plasma cells Presence of immature plasma cells (plasmablastic morphology) Absence of chromosome 13 and other cytogenetic abnormalities Growth of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) in the bone marrow
